It was probably an offshoot of "A penny for your thoughts"You were hoping for a short summery,but after hours of rambling they were giving you more than you expected with their 2 cents.

it means when you put a pathetic contribution into a discussion or make a really insignificant remark. I think it comes from the idea that each of your thoughts are worth a penny so if you put your 'two cents worth in' then it's like a couple of piddly thoughts

I always thought of it as putting my little contribution in the collection plate that's going round. (?)
