a rat learns to go thru a maze to get the reward (cheese) = operant conditioning a rat goes thru the maze and at the same time it gets the cheese a bell is rung. It associates the cheese (reward) with the bell. Then the cheese is withdrawn but the bell is still rung. The behavior is still reinforced by the bell. From then on, the bell can be used as the "reward" to shape a behavior. In classical conditioning you sometimes have to "re-introduce" the origonial reward to re-inforce the learning.
