On PS2 controllers, what does the analog button do, and why is the red light near this button sometimes on and sometimes off?

The analog button makes the analog sticks work, and the red light shows whether it's switched on or not. Speaking of analog where did the ue go from the end, I always spell it analogue

The analog buttons are used as when the game programmers have assigned actions to all of the other buttons. The red light just means the analog is on for games that use it (most games), its off for games which use only the directional pad.
