Have a look in the ARRL Handbook (American Radio Relay League) or the RSGB Handbook (Radio Society of Great Britain). Most libraries have a copy of one or both. Found under 621.384 or close by. Sometimes they are in in the reference section. You don't need a lot of power if you use decent antennas. Both manuals cover antennas as well as the transmitters.
