  • Everyone is and has been using much less energy every day as it is now. Economic market conditions continue to shape our consumption as do technical advances. A lead sled in the 1960's, (dad's station wagon with the fake wood on the side) would have gotten between 8 to 12mpg. Today even an oversized SUV can get 15 to 18mpg. In the 1960's a VW Type 1 (bug) with a 1600cc engine would make 48hp and at best get 25mpg. Today a 1600cc engine can make 150hp and get 35 to 38mpg. Everyone is replacing tungsten filament bulbs with compact flourescent and using about 1/3 of the elcetricity. In the 1960's we had radios and TVs with vac tubes that sucked 500 to 1000 watts. Today everything is solid state and we have LCD displays that sip electricity. In the 1960's we heated up the electric stove for just about anything, today we nuke or food in 60 seconds in the microwave. In the 1960s fuel guzzling airliners had turojet engines, today they are comparative misers with high bypass turbofans. In the 1960's we poured fuel into our burners and spun the elctric meters with AC with abandon. Today we super insulate our homes and always seek higher efficency systems and appliances. The problem is that what was the third-world is now coming online and being consumers too. In the US the population has doubled. The 150 million population is now believed to be over 300 million. So, it's an never ending battle. Polution is an issue. Global warming? I don't know. I'm tired of being lied to by the scientists who really don't have a clue. We will heat up... ok, we are overdue for another ice age too. The real impact is from solar flares? Give me a break and stop trying to scare me with facts that are really theory.
