Have you noticed that hardcover books are made in various heights and widths making them difficult to place in a bookshelf? Why is this not more standardized?

Your question is good from a practical point of view. some subjects demand large formats, though, and others not. It is a question of design, and that should not be standardized, because it is a creative activity. Even if I have problems fitting my many books into the shelves, I still enjoy that they are all different. There are great traditions in bookmaking, for instance if you look at French typography and book design as opposed to German, English or American.
