It's a little vague, but my take on it is that he has the ability to understand how things work and then apply that knowledge to himself. He opens up the skulls of other supers to see their brains and studies them a bit to get that information. The big difference between him and Petrelli is that Sylar can use all his powers at once while Petrelli (so far) can use only one at a time.

Started with his ability to fix ANYTHING, then he can steal powers by eating the brains of the powerful.

Yeah, first he could fix anything. Then he started killing people with powers and taking the part of their brain that had the power. I'm not sure what he did with them....did he eat them? I guess that would have to be it, because he couldn't exactly put the part of the brain in his head...could he? Well, I don't see how digesting the brains would do much either....I don't know. Maybe I should post this as a question....? Maybe I should stop writing dotdotdot...?

Sylar's power is not to steal powers or fix things. He has the ability to instinctivly know how things work. This just makes him able to fix things easily and steal powers. He used his ability to figure out the connection between powers and the brain. So when he kills someone, he can gain there power by studying the brain.

what i've gathered is that somehow(noone REALLY knows)syler takes their power from their brain..who knows if he eats them or what...but manages to find something to knock them out with...!!

He has the ability to understand how things work, he does not eat the brains of those who he kills for their powers. Also he does not have to kill a person to take their power, by connecting with the person on an emotional level and seeing the person use their ability he can gain that power.

Sylar's innate ability is the power to determine exactly how things work. Sylar used this innate ability to discover how to take the abilities of other evolved humans. Arthur revealed to Sylar that he can obtain the abilities of other people without killing them through empathy. With this ability comes a 'hunger' for more knowledge and power. Sylar believes that it is this hunger that drives him to murder others and steal their powers. With Sylar's ability enabling him to take the abilities of others, he has acquired many abilities. His god - given ability is to know how things work, but with the help of 'the hunger' and his killing...he had obtained many many more.
