Is it possible to physically disable the L3/R3 buttons? If so, how?

It is my understanding that there is no practical way to disable the L3 and R3 buttons on a Playstation Dual Shock 1 or 2 controller. Since the buttons are actually a part of the analog sticks, "physically disabling" them may interfere with analog control. Why one would want to disable the buttons to begin with is an enigma seeing as how they are rarely used in games and widely overlooked by many gamers. The only option to disabling either button would be to toggle configuration controls on a select game, thus eliminating their functions.

you could open up the controller, dissesemble the analog stick, and then remove the clicky button underneath. but that may not work and also your games where you need to click wouldnt work either
