The Driving Standards Agency states that on average a person requires approx 44 hours of professional lessons combined with approx 22 hours of private practice. Most people on average have 12 lessons but it depends on the idividual if they need more

Hmmm,...my brother and his wife visited the UK and rented a car. He only had to have his U.S. driver's license. I don't know that he had to take a test of any kind, other than being reminded to drive on the left side...probably not relavent to your question...
