Why do Americans call what I would describe as 'jelly', 'jello'? Is there a specific reason?

Not sure Lovehearts other than that is the name it is marleted under here in the States. A piece of useless Jello trivia. Utah is the largest consumer of Jello brand products in the whole United States.

It's a genericide - a brand name becoming a common name . Jell-o is a brand of jelly dessert.

Jell-o is the number one manufacturer and has become a default non-proper noun. Like scotch tape, velcro, post-it notes, kleenex, etc.
