What is the meaning behind the line "When gossamer doggies ran ran" in Marcy Playgrounds "Poppies"? Can anyone explain the song lyrics in a more plain sense?

Gossamer means "a fine, filmy cobweb seen on grass or bushes or floating in the air in calm weather, esp. in autumn." These type of cobwebs are found in fields of poppies and float around aimlessly, perhaps like running dogs? That's how I interpret it anyways.
