The golfer controls the flex of the club. The stiffness of the shaft should be chosen to fit your swinging style. Smooth swings often benefit from a softer flex. A swing that gets jerks at the top when following into the downswing will probably need a stiffer shaft. If your drives go left, you might benefit from a stiffer flex; if your drives go right, you might benefit from a softer flex. This information has been compared through opinions of competitive golfers.

The "ideal" stiffness for a particular golfer depends on many factors. One of the main considerations in picking a particular stiffness depends upon how far you hit the ball. As a general rule of thumb the more flexible the shaft, the easier it becomes to hit the ball further. However, the more flexible the shaft, the harder it becomes to be accurate with the direction of the shot. Most pro golfers are more concerned with accurracy so they tend to use a more stiff shaft than most amateurs.
