  • Realistically, about 7 years. Blu-ray and HD-DVD are still battling it out and both only really make a difference to people with HDTV. Since there are millions of people that have not and do not immediately plan to upgrade to HD, many will not bother with either of the "Mega DVD" formats, and even those who HAVE HDTV are waiting to see which format wins the war. Therefore our current DVDs will remain popular for QUITE a while. Look how long CDs have been around despite the predictions!

  • Overall, I would say 15 to 20 years (though we're well into that period), as that seems to be the "generational" period of such devices, which strangely corresponds to a human generation...
