  • Philosophers Aristotle and Thomas Hobbes (among others I'm sure, but these are 2 I'm aware of) distinguished two types of law: Positive Law and Natural Law. Natural Law is man's understanding of morality, while Positive Law means the statutes created by the lawmakers or those who govern. The following quote illustrates the distinction quite simply I think: "Under natural law something is forbidden because it is wrong, being unsuitable to our human nature, properly understood.
