A Greek city state was called a polis (plural poleis) (poleis in Greek) in ancient times. The polis was a small autonomous political unit (it was a self -governing entity that acted independently from outside forces). The polis was composed of a fortified high ground, called an acropolis, a central place of assembly and market, called the agora. There is much more information that I could include about the Greek polis but this can be reserved for another question.
