  • English is my first language. I speak and read Spanish pretty well, but still have things to learn. As a child i was exposed to French and German in which i can communicate, but not fluently. I can read Dutch, Yiddish and Afrikaans with difficulty, mainly because they are related to German. The same is true for Italian and Portuguese because they are related to French and Spanish. Knowing more than 2 languages is great but not all that amazing, especially if the next languages are related to one you know already. With a bit of study and practice, you can get along in many languages, even if you are not fluent. If you only speak one language, i strongly urge you to learn another, even if you are older or feel you are of limited ability. This will open doors for you and improve your use of your native language. Basic English vocabulary is closely related to German and Dutch and also to Norwegian, Swedish and Danish. Adult, or educated, English vocabulary is related to Spanish, French, Italian and Portuguese. If you have a very good English vocab, you already know thousands of words in these other languages; they are simply disguised a little. (I'm on my soapbox here.) You can actually learn enough of all these languages to express yourself simply and to have at least an idea of what you see on foreign signs or other writings. I'm an American of only slightly above average intelligence, without a college education, who has never left North America and barely travelled outside the USA. If i can pick up this much language, almost anyone can learn at least something of a second or even a third and fourth one. OK, that's my sermon for the day. Thanks for reading
  • I would consider German as my second language. My first, native language is French.
  • In addition to my first language, English, I can speak reasonably fluent Spanish and passable French. In fact, I'll be spending nine months studying in Spain next year so I should be fluent by the time I leave. I'm probably more familiar with the dead Latin and Classical Greek languages than the living ones that I could actually be using. Shame.
