To try to balance society, it was suppose to help bring equalibrium for every neg action a neg reaction & take away rights & freedoms from those who don't behave like they should or obey laws but its rarely pushed on the individuals it should be because they have good lawyers!

To bring about correction. When you do something wrong, by receiving punishment you learn not to offend again.

punishment seldom achieves it goals it mostly does the opposite . education is better , and lasts longer.

There are certain standards of behavior that are required for people to function as a society. We can't very well work together to trade and barter goods if every time we come accross another human, it's just as likely that he'll kill and steal our stuff. But if there's a system of laws in place, with effective punsihments to not only remove people like that from society, but to discourage others from the same behavior, it becomes easier to trust one another. Plus, someone's gotta make the license plates.

If you're referring to punishment for criminals, it's a type of societal retribution.
