  • Insulin is a naturally occurring hormone. The first people to isolate it were Canadian surgeon Fred Banting and his med student assistant Charles Best in the 1920s. The pair were aided by JJR Macleod and James Collip, the latter markedly improving the purification, before administering the extract (initially from oxes) with dramatic results The first human analogue (artificial) insulin was created by Eli Lilly in the 1980s (Humulin)
