It may if you are criminally charged over the "cruel treatment" and found guilty in a court of law. However, terms such terms may be desired or required in a divorce, depending on the jurisdiction in which the divorce papers were filed. A divorce may be granted in a shorter period of time if certain actions were deemed to have caused the marriage breakdown. A no-fault divorce may not be allowed in the jurisdiction, forcing an applicant to use a legally-acceptable reason for the divorce. Many divorces used to be granted on the grounds of 'mental cruelty', when no such 'cruelty' ever took place. In the end, the content of the divorce papers are the business of no one, but you, your ex-spouse, and the courts, except when there are criminal charges relating to the divorce or an incident at a later date.
