How many different religions are in the Middle East? Are there sub-religions, like the Christians have with Protestants and Baptists, etc?

There are many religions and religious subgroups in the Middle East. In the Syrian Arab Republic (Syria) alone there are six type of Catholics: + Armenian + Chaldean + Latin (Roman) + Maronite + Melkit + Syrian http://www.catholic-hierarchy.org/country/dsy2.html With love in Christ.

According to my Muslim buddies from Saudi, there's, of course, the separation of Sunni's and Shiite's but though islam is the same everywhere there are cultural differences in the ways that they interpret the koran but they are not considered different sects...does that make sense?
