Because sometimes, psychologically one may seek what he doesn't have within, on a subconscious level (unbeknownst to the person). This is why dismissive avoidants types are often attracted to anxious avoidant, because they seek the warmth of emotion which they deny themselves, and the anxious attached is attracted to the DA's independent nature, however what normally happens is the DA ends up feeling the anxious attached is too needy or clingy, and the anxious attached sees the initial independent as cold and stand offish, so it doesn't work, but because neither do the work to intergrate their own opposites within themselves, they continue to be attracted to what they don't have within, and the circle repeats. Until they become securely attached, they will seek outside, what they lack inside.
