Gen. Howe held back slaughtering Washington's entire force at Brooklyn, feeling he didn't want to go down in history for killing what he considered to be his own countrymen. Washington led the retreat through the fog. Had Howe gone through with it, the revolution would have ended in the summer of 1776.
