  • As of the census of 2000, there were 3,644 people, 1,402 households, and 1,030 families residing in the city. The population density was 423.8/km sq (1,097.4/mi sq). There were 1,571 housing units at an average density of 182.7/km sq (473.1/mi sq). The racial makeup of the city was 68.52% White, 30.10% African American, 0.22% Native American, 0.22% Asian, 0.05% from Race (United States Census)other races, and 0.88% from two or more races. There were 1,402 households out of which 28.8% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 54.2% were Marriagemarried couples living together, 14.8% had a female householder with no husband present, and 26.5% were non-families. 24.9% of all households were made up of individuals and 14.0% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.48 and the average family size was 2.94. In the city the population was spread out with 23.6% under the age of 18, 6.7% from 18 to 24, 24.6% from 25 to 44, 23.6% from 45 to 64, and 21.5% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 42 years. For every 100 females there were 88.4 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 80.7 males. The per capita income for the city was $16,205.
