• As of the censusGeographic references#2 of 2000, there were 3,381 people, 1,320 households, and 819 families residing in the city. The population density was 422.5/km sq (1,095.0/mi sq). There were 1,407 housing units at an average density of 175.8/km sq (455.7/mi sq). The racial makeup of the city was 96.36% White, 1.06% African American, 0.65% Native American, 0.21% Asian, 0.56% from Race (United States Census)other races, and 1.15% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 2.54% of the population. There were 1,320 households out of which 32.3% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 43.4% were Marriagemarried couples living together, 14.1% had a female householder with no husband present, and 37.9% were non-families. 32.1% of all households were made up of individuals and 11.7% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.33 and the average family size was 2.94. In the city the population was spread out with 23.0% under the age of 18, 12.8% from 18 to 24, 28.5% from 25 to 44, 19.8% from 45 to 64, and 15.9% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 35 years. For every 100 females there were 93.5 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 88.4 males. The median income for a household in the city was $29,831, and the median income for a family was $41,705. Males had a median income of $29,668 versus $22,875 for females. The per capita income for the city was $17,053. About 10.0% of families and 12.0% of the population were below the poverty line, including 14.1% of those under age 18 and 13.9% of those age 65 or over. Source:
