• As of the censusGeographic references#2 of 2000, there were 6,701 people, 3,103 households, and 1,746 families residing in the city. The population density was 716.7/km sq (1,857.0/mi sq). There were 3,241 housing units at an average density of 346.6/km sq (898.2/mi sq). The racial makeup of the city was 96.61% White, 0.34% African American, 0.42% Native American, 1.31% Asian, 0.39% from Race (United States Census)other races, and 0.93% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.48% of the population. There were 3,103 households out of which 25.7% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 44.3% were Marriagemarried couples living together, 9.1% had a female householder with no husband present, and 43.7% were non-families. 37.8% of all households were made up of individuals and 15.5% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.15 and the average family size was 2.87. In the city the population was spread out with 21.7% under the age of 18, 8.5% from 18 to 24, 31.9% from 25 to 44, 21.4% from 45 to 64, and 16.6% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 37 years. For every 100 females there were 87.6 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 81.8 males. The median income for a household in the city was $47,897, and the median income for a family was $62,222. Males had a median income of $48,554 versus $30,877 for females. The per capita income for the city was $28,393. About 3.0% of families and 5.1% of the population were below the poverty line, including 5.9% of those under age 18 and 5.2% of those age 65 or over.
