As of the 2000 census, the CDP population was 8,333, however the actual population of The Villages is considerably larger as the CDP only includes the section of The Villages within Sumter County while the more heavily populated sections in Lake County are included within the figures for the town of Lady Lake, FloridaLady Lake. It is the central location of The Villages, Florida, Micropolitan Statistical Area, which consists of Sumter County. The original portions of the complex (Orange Blossom Gardens) and the town square (Spanish Springs) are in Lake County, FloridaLake County, however the newly constructed community of Sumter Landing was built in 2005 as a second more commercially oriented town square and is wholly within Sumter County. A small portion of The Villages is also located within Marion County, FloridaMarion County.
