Oral contraceptives may cause spotting for a number of reasons. Hormonal fluctuations are the most common reason cited. This may be caused by low estrogen levels normal to oral-contraceptive use, or by skipping a pill. Spotting is also seen in oral contraceptive users who smoke or have a chamydial infection.
