Though Christopher Latham Sholes, from Milwaukee, Wisconsin, patented the first practical typewriter, it was mass-produced in Ilion, New York, by E. Remington & Sons, to whom Sholes sold the patent. He also invented the QWERTY keyboard to slow typists down.
