Spinal stenosis is a narrowing of at least one area in your spine that places pressure on your nerves and spinal cord. Spinal stenosis can cause pain and/or loss of feeling in your shoulders, arms, neck, back or legs.
Primary Spinal Stenosis
Spinal stenosis is present at birth in rare cases. This is referred to as primary spinal stenosis.
Acquired Spinal Stenosis
Acquired spinal stenosis is the most common form of this condition. People over age 50 are most at risk.
Osteoarthritis
Spinal stenosis usually is caused by bone damage that is related to an arthritic condition known as osteoarthritis. This degenerative disorder wears down the cartilage that pads the ends of bones in your joints.
Skeletal Fluorosis
People with a rare and potentially bone-crippling disease known as skeletal fluorosis are more prone to spinal stenosis.
Excess Weight
Excess weight places undue stress on your bones and joints. Getting regular physical activity can help you maintain a healthy weight and keep your spine, ligaments and joints strong and flexible.
