Sexually transmitted diseases, or STDs, do not cause urinary tract infections, but they can cause similar symptoms. When a urine sample is collected for diagnosis, presence of bacteria indicate infection and their absence suggests an STD. Symptoms of chlamydia, gonorrhea and genital herpes most commonly mimic a urinary tract infection.
