According to Dr. Ronald Hoffman, nausea is nature's way of suppressing your appetite. When you are nauseous, your brain tells your mouth to salivate, your windpipe begins to contract, and you are no longer hungry. There are many causes of persistent nausea.
Chemotherapy
If you are on chemotherapy, anesthesia, or tricyclic antidepressants, these can cause nausea. If you experience this, you should talk to your doctor about taking anti-nausea medication.
Pregnancy
During the first trimester of pregnancy, women experience constant nausea. This is due to the shifting of hormones in the body during the time of pregnancy.
Digestive Problems
If you have persistent nausea, that could be a sign of a more serious digestive problem. You should talk to your doctor about being checked for colitis, ulcers and gallstones.
Stress
Stress or anxiety can also lead to nausea. Stress and anxiety causes strain on the body and the emotions. Stress can also cause other stomach symptoms such as heartburn and gas.
Inner Ear
Hoffman says that the balance of the inner ear can also cause nausea. For example, if you experience seasickness, the fluid in your inner ear rocks with the boat, which causes nausea.
