Fungal infections occur when fungi are allowed to breed in warm moist areas on the body. The most common areas of infection are the finger nails, toe nails and groin. While fungal infections can be annoying, they can be easily treated with treatments prescribed by your doctor, purchased over the counter and natural treatments.
Symptoms
Fungal infections on the skin can be defined by round or red patches of skin that are clear in the middle. They are sometimes inflamed with dry flaky skin around the infected area. Infections on the finger and toe nails can include dry cracked skin between the folds, accompanied by a burning itch and discolored nails.
Diagnosis
A doctor will look at the area to determine the kind of fungal infection you have. Once he has determined the type of fungus he will prescribe treatment.
Treatment
Most fungal infections are treated with topical anti-fungal ointments that are applied directly to the affected area. In some cases a doctor may prescribe an oral antibiotic in addition to the anti-fungal ointment. In cases of minor infection, anti-fungal ointment can be purchased over the counter.
Natural Treatments
Fungal infections can be treated with natural ingredients. Tea tree oil, vitamin A, honey and garlic can all be used to treat and ease the discomfort of fungal infections.
Effects
Fungal infections can take anywhere from one to four weeks to be cured.
Prevention/Solution
Wearing sandals in public pools and locker rooms, and changing socks and underwear daily can help reduce your risk of fungal infection and keep infection from recurring.
