  • Female dogs go into estrus or heat for about one to three weeks; this only occurs once or twice per year. During this time, the female dog ovulates and can be receptive to breeding. The cycle starts with proestrus, where the dog may have discharge and swelling. This cycle leads into estrus, where she ovulates. It's followed by a two-month diestrus, where either she is pregnant or not.
