Witnessing your dog having a seizure can be a very distressing experience. It can also be a confusing one. You will inevitably wonder what brought on the seizure in your dog. While a range of possible causes exist, it's important to consult your veterinarian immediately. She can determine the root cause of the problem.
Epilepsy
Epilepsy is a disorder characterized by recurring seizures. While the exact cause of epilepsy is unknown, it can be treated with barbiturates (Phenobarbital, for instance) or Potassium Bromide.
Brain Damage
Trauma to the head or poor blood flow to the brain may induce a seizure.
Poisoning
If your dog has ingested poison or another toxic substance (including chemicals, fertilizers, certain foods or fungi), he may experience a seizure.
Eclampsia
A disorder caused by low calcium levels, eclampsia, can affect female dogs who are nursing their young. The decreased calcium levels have been linked to seizures.
Blood Glucose Levels
Your dog may suffer a seizure if his blood glucose levels are too high (diabetes) or too low (hypoglycemia).
Hereditary
Certain breeds of dogs are predisposed to seizures, including the German Shepherd, Dachshund, Chihuahua and Belgian Tervureren.
