Power lines are large strands of wires that are attached to poles. These lines bring electricity to houses and other buildings. Because of the amount of electricity in them, they can be very dangerous.
Electrocution
If you climb the pole and come in contact with the power line, you could be electrocuted with enough power to stop your heart.
Storms
If a tree branch falls in a storm or if ice buildup becomes too heavy, a power line could break, and the electricity could electrocute someone or start a fire.
Aircraft
Power lines are often very high in the air but can be difficult to see. This poses a risk to low-flying helicopters or small planes, which could collide with the lines and crash.
Health Dangers
High-energy power lines are surrounded by electromagnetic fields, which have been linked with cancer, heart disease, miscarriages and birth defects in residents who live near the power lines.
Environmental Dangers
The electromagnetic fields around power lines have been shown to alter the paths of birds that use geomagnetic fields to navigate during migration. There also is the risk that larger birds or climbing animals could come in contact with the lines and be electrocuted.
