Chimpanzees are extraordinarily human-like, capable of expressing themselves, learning complex tasks and even playing. Movies depict them as human companions. But people may underestimate the chimpanzee's strength and wild heritage. This could lead to a chimpanzee attack.
Domestication
People attempt to domesticate chimpanzees. Charla Nash was attacked in February 2009 by her friend's 200-lb. pet chimpanzee,Travis, while trying to get him back into his cage.
Over-Familiarity
Familiarity with one chimp as a pet can breed a dangerous comfort level with others. St. James and LaDonna Davis were attacked while visiting their relinquished pet chimpanzee at a private animal sanctuary.
Primal Instinct
According to a white paper published by Springer Science + Business Media, "chimpanzees engage in lethal aggression within and between social units." If a human is seen as a member of a social unit, primal instinct may take over.
Zoo-Sanctuary Escape
In 2006, some chimpanzees escaped from a 100-acre animal sanctuary in Africa. When Gary Brown stopped his car to take a picture of them, he and his co-workers were attacked and badly injured.
Summary
Chimpanzees are to be treated with care and caution at all times. Humans who allow themselves to underestimate the primal nature of these animals open themselves up for chimpanzee attack.
