<h4 class="dechead">On One Hand: It's Not Always Necessary to Send a Thank-You Card
If the only communication or gesture you received from someone is a sympathy card, it is not necessary to respond with a thank-you card. Sympathy cards convey condolences, but they do not replace attendance at an event, such as funeral, and if a gift or donation did not accompany the card, a thank-you card is not necessary.
On the Other: It Can Be Appropriate
If you receive a thank-you card from someone who was very close to either yourself or a love one who passed on, then the extra effort of responding with a thank-you card is appropriate. A thank-you card should be sent if the sympathy card came with a gift or donation.
Bottom Line
This is a personal choice that should be decided on individual circumstances. Most people will not expect a thank-you card to be sent in response to a sympathy card, especially when you are dealing with difficult circumstances. Many people choose to send thank-you cards to everyone who signed the registry at a wake or funeral, but when it is only a card, you should feel no obligation.
