  • According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, nursing is one of the fastest growing career fields. By 2018, it should grow by 22 percent. It is also a profession that has several different types of nursing degrees.

    LPN or LVN

The licensed practical nurse (LPN) and the licensed vocational nurse degree (LVN) programs continue for a year. These degree programs include classroom and on-the-job training. These programs can take place in a hospital, community college or even a technical school. To get your license, you must take an examination after you complete the program.

    ASN Program

After completing either the LPN or LVN program, many students go on to get an associate of science in nursing (ASN) degree. This degree will help you to take the licensing exam needed to get an LPN or LVN.

    BSN Program

To become a registered nurse (RN), you must complete a bachelor's degree in science. If you decide to go this route, it requires four years of study. On successful completion of education and state examinations, you will finish with a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) degree.

    2nd Degree BSN Program

If you already have a degree in a field not associated with nursing, a second-degree BSN program will help you get credit for the course work you already have and to complete a nursing degree in two years or less.

    MSN Program

After getting a bachelor's degree, many nurses go on to get a master's degree in the field to get better positions and more money. This program usually takes 18 months to two years to complete.
