There are some drawbacks to distance learning even though it offers students a convenient way to complete a college degree, train for a new career or earn a professional certificate without having to commute to and from campus.
Fewer Opportunities to Socialize
Distance learning students can communicate with their classmates through online seminars and discussion forums, but opportunities to socialize with other students in person are very limited.
Skill Requirements
Successful distance learning students can communicate well in writing, are able to troubleshoot technical problems and have excellent computer skills.
Requires Self-Management
With professors only available through e-mail or live chat, it may be difficult for students to receive assistance or feedback. Students are also required to manage their study time, course materials and assignments with little or no guidance.
More Affordable
Distance learning students are not required to pay for gas or room and board. The use of technology such as e-books and online libraries also makes it more affordable for students to have access to their learning materials.
Flexible Scheduling
Distance learning courses are available whenever students have time to study. A minimum number of course work hours may be required, but it is still possible for students to have time for their families and careers.
