Accidents can happen using any type of forklift, whether it be a lift truck, a powered pallet jack or an under-ride forklift. All workers who will be in the vicinity of the work area of a forklift, including the driver, should be aware of the potential hazards.
Tipping Over
Tipping over accounts for 25 percent of forklift accidents, according to the North Carolina State University safety guidelines for forklift use. Loads that are top-heavy, odd-shaped or too large for the forklift can cause tipping, as can running over obstacles.
Moving Too Fast
Accidents also occur when drivers are moving too fast through a work area. Most businesses mandate safe speed limits, and many post speed limit signs in the workplace.
Warning Systems
Many forklifts are equipped with sound devices for indicating forklift movement. This can include any time the forklift is in operation as well as when it is backing up. Failure to heed these warnings causes accidents.
Load Handling
Loads should only be lifted or lowered when the forklift is stopped. Moving loads when driving can cause tipping over, and can also block the driver's vision.
General Awareness
Many accidents happen due to workers being unaware of a forklift's presence. Standing under a lifted load and walking in front of or behind a forklift can lead to accidents, as well.
