Arizona is one of the hottest and driest areas of the United States, and as a result has many plants and animals living in its expansive desert landscapes. The plants and animals of Arizona are generally unique to their environment.
Mammals
The most common animals found in Arizona are coyotes, mountain lions, bobcats, black bears, bats and javelinas (a small, boar-like animal).
Birds
Hummingbirds, woodpeckers, wild turkeys, pheasants, grouse, quail, vultures, condors, hawks, eagles, osprey, falcons, owls, crows, ravens, titmice, chickadees and many other birds can be found in Arizona. The state bird is the cactus wren.
Reptiles
Snakes, turtles, lizards and amphibians of all sorts live in the deserts of Arizona. Iguanas, Gila monsters and skinks are some of the lizards in the region, which also include desert tortoise.
Cacti
Most people identify the cactus plant with Arizona. This makes sense because cacti are located all over the state. There are hundreds of cactus types.
Other Plants
The state flower of Arizona is the saguaro cactus blossom. There are many other plants in Arizona, including acacias, junipers, paloverdes, pines, oaks and yucca.
