  • Spider veins are blue or red veins that are visible just under the surface of the skin. They most often appear in older people on the legs and the face. While spider veins pose no health threat, some people seek cosmetic treatment for this condition.

    Frequency

According to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, varicose veins occur in 50 percent of people over 50. Women are more likely to develop the condition than men.

    Sclerotherapy

Most people with spider veins undergo sclerotherapy, in which a doctor injects a solution into the vein to bind vein walls. Spider veins will then vanish when the blood flow stops.

    Laser

A newer treatment is laser therapy. Using a laser, the doctor will use a burst of energy to seal up the vein. While this treatment is effective, it can be quite painful.

    Varicose Veins

Varicose veins are similar to spider veins, but are thicker and deeper. Treatment for varicose veins tends to be more intensive than that of spider veins.

    Prevention/Solution

While nothing completely prevents spider veins, the use of sunscreen, reducing weight and promoting good circulation to the legs can help reduce the chances of developing them.
