Flatboats were large barge-like boats that carried entire families and all of their possessions toward their eventual new homes settling the Ohio River valley. They were propelled by "sweeps," which were sets of long oars mounted on the sides. Flatboats were also equipped with a "hawser," a strong rope mounted to a reel on the ship, which was wound around something onshore and then was used to pull the boat along the water.
