A wide range of requirements and conditions determine whether an individual, spouse or family member has to file a federal tax return with the Internal Revenue Service (IRS).
Single Taxpayers
According to the Walletpop website, single taxpayers under age 65 must file a return if they grossed at least $9,350 in income in 2009. For taxpayers age 65 and older, the minimum requirement is $10,750.
Marriage and Family Status
The Walletpop website states that married taxpayers may file jointly or as a single. The minimum gross income requirements vary depending on age or marital circumstances. Heads of households, dependents, widows and widowers must also file if they earn certain minimum incomes.
Earnings and Payments
According to the IRS, self-employed people must file if they made $400 or more from their business. Employees who received an Earned Income Credit from their employer must also file.
Church Income
The IRS states that employees earning $108.28 or more from a tax-exempt church have to file a return.
Other Circumstances
People who do not meet the previously mentioned criteria may still need to file if they owe FICA, Medicare, unreported income or retirement income taxes, according to the IRS.
