<h4 class="dechead">On One Hand: Reduces Androgen Production
Excess androgens in the hair follicle cause the follicle to shrink, therefore altering the life-cycle of hair. This can lead to hair loss in women. Aldactone, a brand-name for the drug spironolactone, slows the production of androgens in the adrenal glands and ovaries and prevents the resulting hair loss.
On the Other: Not a Permanent Fix
Unless androgen levels are kept balanced by other methods, a woman's hair loss will resume if she stops taking Aldactone.
Bottom Line
Aldactone may help women experiencing hair loss, but a complete course of action should be discussed with a dermatologist. The patient and doctor should decide together if Aldactone is the best treatment, and determine how best to balance androgen levels so that hair loss does not continue after treatment is discontinued.
