The requirements for donating cars depend on the charity that the donor is working with, and vary slightly from state to state. Typically, when donating a car, the owner brings the keys and the car title.
Keys
When delivering a car to a charity, the donor leaves the keys to the car with the charity. If the keys have been lost, or misplaced, the car may be towed to a nearby charity or auction house.

Delivery
It is advisable to deliver the car directly to the charity. Alternatively, towing can be arranged either through a specific charity or a donation service.
Before Auction
It is important to transfer the car title to the name of the charity that the donor is working with. Otherwise, the owner remains liable for future parking tickets and accidents.
Donation Services
Be advised that donation services are often private, for-profit ventures. Some of the money from the proceeds of the car will go to them. Working directly with charities and delivering a car in person ensures that all of the money goes directly to a charity.
