Workplace safety and health legislation has had a dramatic impact on the American workplace. Safety and health inspections are performed regularly in many industries, and recent laws have added protection for "whistle-blowers" who expose unsafe conditions.
OSH Act
The Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970 developed broad standards designed to "assure safe and healthful working conditions," across several industries.
OSHA
The OSH Act resulted in the creation of the Occupational Safety and Health Administration. OSHA is the principal body responsible for enforcing and regulating workplace safety and health.
State Legislation
The OSH Act allows the various states to develop their own standards regarding workplace health and safety. As of 2009, 26 states had adopted plans approved by OSHA.
Mine Safety
The Mine Safety and Health Act of 1977 implemented safety and health standards for the mining industry, and established the Mine Safety and Health Administration.
Fair Labor
The Fair Labor Standards Act of 1938 created the federal minimum wage, banned child labor and developed standards regarding working hours and overtime.
