Emergency medical technicians (EMTs) are responsible for the assessment and appropriate emergency care of sick and injured patients and transporting them to a medical facility in an ambulance, if necessary.
At the Scene
EMTs often work with firefighters and police at accident scenes. EMTs must assess a patient's condition and try to gather information about any pre-existing conditions.
Treatment
Some EMTs are trained to treat minor problems onsite without taking patients to a medical facility. They provide treatment as directed by a physician.
Teamwork
EMTs usually work in teams. They may need to immobilize patients, put them on stretchers and secure them for transport. One EMT drives the ambulance, while another monitors and attends to the patient.
At a Medical Facility
EMTs take the patient to emergency department, report their assessment and actions to the staff, and may provide additional treatment there.
Preparing Supplies
EMTs must replenish their supplies and keep their equipment ready for the next emergency. If they have transported someone with an infectious disease, they must follow decontamination procedures and report the case to the proper authorities.
