Education
Hair stylists may hold a diploma from a high school vocational program, a certificate from a post-secondary training program or an associate's degree in the field.
Time Frame
Associate degree programs typically require two years to complete. Certificate programs may be as short as nine months, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics.
Locations
Associate's degrees are offered by community and beauty colleges, while certificates are granted by cosmetology schools and beauty colleges.
Cost
The average cost of a beauty school certificate program is between $6,500 and $10,000, according to the Beauty Schools Directory. For the 2009-10 school year, the average cost of one year at a community college was $2,544, reports Collegeboard.com.
Licensure
After graduation from a state-approved education program, it is necessary to pass a written or practical examination offered by your state in order to receive a license to work independently in the field.
