A region-free DVD plays on virtually any DVD player manufactured in any country. Most DVDs are region-specific, making the discs readable only by DVD players from the same region or country of origin.
Geography
Different parts of the world are assigned a numerical region code. In the United States and most of North America, for instance, DVDs are Region 1.
Function
Regional lockout is a common practice for most DVD manufacturers. A DVD may be coded by its maker for a specific region so that, for example, Region 1 DVDs will play only in Region 1 DVD players.
Significance
Regional lockout helps prevent copyright crimes and embargoes by keeping countries without distribution rights or royalties to a film from releasing the same film in a different region code.
Benefits
Having a region-free DVD means the disc is readable on a DVD player from virtually anywhere in the world. This type of DVD is generally harder to find than ones with regional lockout, but are a good choice for frequent international travelers.
Identification
DVDs labeled Region Zero or All Region are the same as region-free DVDs. These, too, will play in almost any DVD player throughout the world.
